Privacy Policy

This policy explains what happens to your personal information when you visit linodash.com or subscribe to the newsletter. I’m James Njoya, I run LinoDash on my own, and I’m responsible for the data described here.

What I collect

What you give me

• Your email address when you subscribe, plus your first name if you choose to add it.
• Your name, email address and message when you write to me through the contact form.
• Your name, email address and comment if you leave a comment on an article.

What is collected automatically

When you browse the site, analytics records roughly where you are (country or city, from your IP address), what device and browser you use, which pages you open and for how long, where you arrived from, and when you visited. It is used in aggregate to see what’s working, not to identify you.

What I never collect

Payment or card details, because there is nothing to pay for here. Sensitive information such as health, religious or political data. Your phone number or postal address.

I don’t use your data to make automated decisions about you, and I don’t build profiles of individual readers.

Cookies and analytics

Cookies are small files a site stores on your device. This one uses a limited set: Google Analytics measures how the site is used, and the on-site message tools remember which notices you have already dismissed so you aren’t shown them twice.

Your browser is the control point. You can block or delete cookies in its settings, and most browsers can refuse them before they are set, though some parts of the site may then behave differently. To opt out of Google Analytics everywhere, install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Who else touches your data

I don’t sell your personal information. I share it only with the services that make the site and the newsletter work. Each one processes data on my behalf and publishes its own privacy policy.

I may also disclose information where the law requires it, or to protect my rights or someone’s safety. If I ever hand the site or newsletter to a new owner, subscriber data would move with it, and I would email you before that happened.

Where your data is processed

I work from Kenya. The services above may store and process data in the United States, the European Union or elsewhere, so your information may be handled outside the country you live in, under different data protection laws. Where that happens, those providers rely on recognised safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses.

How long I keep it

• Subscriber details. Kept for as long as you stay subscribed. When you unsubscribe I stop sending and remove your details, keeping only the minimum record needed to make sure you aren’t added back by mistake.
• Messages you send me. Kept for as long as the conversation and any sensible follow-up needs.
• Comments. Kept until you ask me to remove them.
• Analytics. Kept for the retention period set in Google Analytics, mostly in aggregate form.

Your rights

Wherever you live, I’ll honour these:

• See it. Ask what I hold about you and get a copy.
• Fix it. Ask me to correct anything wrong or incomplete.
• Delete it. Ask me to erase your personal data.
• Withdraw consent. Unsubscribe whenever you like; it doesn’t affect anything done beforehand.
• Object or restrict. Ask me to stop or limit a particular use.
• Take it with you. Ask for your data in a portable, machine-readable format.

If you live in California, you also have the right to know what is collected, to have it deleted or corrected, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. I do not sell or share personal information as California law defines those terms, and nothing changes for you if you exercise a right.

The quickest way to stop the emails is the unsubscribe link at the bottom of every newsletter. For anything else, email contact@linodash.com. I’ll reply within 30 days, and I may need to check who you are first so that nobody else can request your data.

How I protect it

The site runs over an encrypted connection, and the services I use are established providers with their own security practices. I take reasonable technical and organisational measures to keep your information safe, though no site or service can promise perfect security. If a breach ever affects your rights, I’ll tell you and the relevant authority as the law requires.

Children and other websites

This site is written for adults and isn’t aimed at children under 16, and I don’t knowingly collect their data. If you think a child has sent me something, tell me and I’ll delete it. Articles here also link out to tools and sites I don’t run; once you follow a link, that company’s privacy policy applies, not mine.

Changes to this policy

I’ll update this page when what I do with data changes, when I change tools, or when the law does. The date at the top always shows the last revision, and I’ll mention anything significant in the newsletter.
